A practical approach to modern marketing.

I’ve been in marketing for a quarter of a century.

In that time, I’ve written a lot of copy. Developed a lot of successful programs. And learned that marketing’s a game of message, drama and detail.

I write for organizations big and small, for-profits and nonprofits.

A decade ago, I found myself writing a little less, and consulting a little more – on topics like Web strategy, email programs, online brand development, engagement marketing and social media.

That’s good. For most small and medium sized organizations, a clear messaging platform and sound marketing plan offer many times the impact of a clever headline.

These days, I even find myself teaching online marketing classes.

Gratifying.

My Past

While I’ve been self-employed most of the last 25 years, I’ve also worked at two ad agencies (a performance products agency in the Southeast and a Top-20 high-tech agency in the Silicon Valley). In that time, I’ve written for companies like:

  • Apple
  • AMD
  • Bell Helmets
  • Fram/Autolite
  • Edify
  • Many, many others

Today, I often work with small and medium-sized companies – the product of a personal discovery.

I realized I’d rather help a client – I mean really help them – than simply plow my way through a generic gig.

I’d make more money mass-producing copy for web sites, but then again, I’d make more money living and working in a big city, and I’m not doing that either.

The Personal Stuff

I’m married, have a young daughter, and live at the base of a 14,179′ inactive volcano in the mountains of Northern California.

A photojournalist by training, I took a right turn into copywriting over two decades ago, working in two advertising agencies along the way.

A fly fisher and outdoorsman, I also write a “Top 10″ writing blog and a “Top 3″ fly fishing blog.
